Base Camp

Our base camp, Aquacade , is situated on the banks of the mighty Orange River, South Africa’s longest river. Called the Gariep in the local Nama tongue, this river is a lifeline in this inhospitable, yet beautiful desert reserve. Bordering the Richtersveld national park, which was declared a world heritage site in 2007, our camp is a pristine oasis, offering all facilities to weary travellers. Shaded with beautiful big trees, mostly from the Rhus and Ziziphus families, travellers keep cool in the hot desert environment. The ablution facilities offer hot showers and flush toilets. Situated in 2 blocks at both ends of the camp, it is within a short walk from wherever you decide to camp. We also have a sparkling pool, deck and restaurant. Our rustic bush bar, offers an array of local and international drinks and if the mood is right, this quiet facility can change into quite a festive mood. Fishing in close proximity of the camp is very good, with yellow fish and catfish/barbell being the most common species caught. Fly-fishermen have brought in big yellows from the rapid just opposite the camp. We offer day rafting trips on the Orange, taking guests on a leisurely paddle on the mighty orange. We paddle past majestic sedimentary sandstone cliffs, have the opportunity to do a 5m cliff jump or just lie back and admire the beautiful gorges and other desert scenery. For the more adventurous we also offer 4 and 6 day Orange River Rafting expeditions into the Richtersveld National park.
